During 1972–2001, research coalesced around psychosocial mechanisms by which relationships, social support, and perceived control shape health outcomes. Research emphasized how social integration buffers stress, supports health behavior, and influences adherence and access to care, using prospective designs and population-based cohorts to establish causal inferences. A unifying trend was the adoption of standardized health outcome measures, notably health-related quality of life instruments, enabling cross-study comparability and routine integration into both research and clinical practice.
